Ptarmigan operated in Tallinn from 2011-2014. This website exists as an archive of its activities during this time. We no longer maintain any presence in Tallinn, but some people involved with Ptarmigan are now operating Temporary in Helsinki.
Helsinki based artist Marek Pluciennik will develop a site specific installation for XL Art Space which will be exhibited from Tuesday 8th October – Monday 14th October. PeepHoleX is part a series of simple live-feed installations that explore mediated liveness and surveillance, themes that Pluciennik first became interested in when he moved to Finland around 18 years ago and noticed the abundance of surveillance cameras in public spaces.
Recently I have experienced three separate performative installations by Pluciennik. In each instance I have been struck by the way in which the audience has become implicated into the site within which they experience the work; implicated into both the ‘real’ physical site and implicated into the mediated-through-technology-site. What interests me the most is the moment of realization when the person implicated realizes that they are in the image, or that the site that they are viewing on screen is the site that they themselves are situated within. My own experience of this moment is a sensation of realignment and reorientation.
In Pluciennik's own words "the obviousness and simplicity of the set up sneaks past the viewers who are accustomed to high tech solutions in similar installation set ups."
